Symptoms

. Excessive bleeding from cuts or injuries.
. Frequent nosebleeds or bleeding gums.
. Unexplained bruises or joint pain/swelling (caused by internal bleeding).
. Prolonged bleeding after surgery or dental procedures.

Causes

Hemophilia is typically inherited through an X-linked recessive pattern. It mainly affects males, while females are usually carriers, though they can also show mild symptoms.

Diagnosis

Hemophilia is typically diagnosed through a combination of the following:

. Medical History and Physical Examination: Reviewing family history of bleeding disorders and assessing symptoms such as frequent             bruising or prolonged bleeding.
.  Blood Tests:  These are conducted to measure clotting factor levels (such as Factor VIII or Factor IX) to determine the severity of the                 condition.
. Genetic Testing:  This is used to identify mutations in the genes responsible for haemophilia and confirm inherited patterns, especially in     families with a history of the disorder.                                                                                                                                                                                             . Prenatal Testing (if applicable):  In cases where there’s a known family history, testing may be done during pregnancy to detect                     hemophilia in the fetus.

Treatment

. Replacement Therapy: Regular infusions of the missing clotting factor (VIII or IX).
. Preventive (prophylactic) treatment to reduce the risk of bleeding episodes.
. Supportive care, including physiotherapy for joint health.

Living with Hemophilia

With proper medical care and lifestyle adjustments, people with hemophilia can lead healthy and productive lives. Education, awareness, and access to treatment are crucial for managing the condition effectively.
It’s important for those with hemophilia to have a strong support system and access to specialized care.

The Hemophilia Society Coimbatore Chapter, affiliated with Hemophilia Federation India (HFI) and the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH), is dedicated to support individuals with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders in and around Coimbatore.
